To gather more inspiration into the display, Molly and Curtis traveled to the northeastern coast. Visiting Boston Massachusetts, Salem Massachusetts, Kennebunkport Maine, and Portland Maine. Down east Boston we visited the Real Pirate exhibit, the Witch House in Salem, and the freedom trail including the USS Constitution and Paul Revere’s house. We traveled north to Maine to see many crypts, graves, and other spooky sites. We walked the docks of many beautiful sea port towns such as Kennebunkport, Ogunquit, Bar Harbor, and Acadia National Park to experience the salt air and get the feel of being a real life pirate.
The Pirates of Spanish Bay 2024 display. Back in port for 2024 season, the Pirates of Spanish Bay featured a new treasure digging scene, a new captain at the helm with a real animated ships wheel and even a new brig for any rum soaked pirates. Also introduced this season is a number of new animations in the graveyard and aboard the ship. The interactive smoke ring cannons and candy chute are all back! The 2024 display was designed to add visual interest to our display by incorporating two new scenes including an all-new brig and a new treasure digging scene. In this design we also added automations that included a haunted shovel digging in the graveyard, a lady pirate swinging gleefully, and the captain at the helm keeping the grand ship Ferdinand on course both day and night.
The build team begins on October 1st by opening up the shop and begins setting up the display. Most evenings you will find us setting up, building new, or adding to existing scenes. Kids as well as adults are always welcomed to come say hello and visit the shop if they see us working. The display begins going up October 1st, and lit for the evening from sundown to sunrise. Even if we are not building, families can enjoy the display throughout the month of October from the sidewalk or viewing from the warmth of their vehicles. Best times for viewing are dusk.
This video features the Pirates of Spanish Bay display as designed for 2023. We had over 1,100 kids on Halloween night and nearly 1400 visitors in October. Additional scenes were added this year including ship enhancements, a broader fog delivery system, storm holograms and of course – more pirates! Sails were constructed as well as smoke ring cannons this year. Back by popular demand was the candy chute. Please turn the sound on for full effect!
The 2023 display was designed to delight visitors of all ages. In this design we incorporated two new scenes as well as live-firing smoke ring cannons and challenged visitors to catch the smoke rings. This interactive exhibit will delight all age groups and abilities.
Many of our wonderfully supportive community members come to see us in the evenings in October as we build the displays. Some have set course to see us from distant lands such as Eugene, Seattle, and even as far away as Taiwan! We are honored to have you aboard, and with all these salty dogs can muster the Pirates of the Spanish Bay salute you. Each of you are cherished members of our crew and you the treasure!
The Happy Valley Halloween House display as designed for Halloween 2022. Featuring realistic fire holograms, witch holograms, a witch seance, singing pumpkins and of course the candy chute made a return this year for speedy candy delivery. A number of prop enhancements were done including new lanterns and animatronic moving skeletons. Please turn the sound on for full effect!
In 2022 we made significant leaps forward in both design and complexity. Additional skeletons were weathered and dressed to complete new scenes and more electronic lights were added so the scenes could be illuminated from sundown to sunup. New fire-themed holograms really made the scene pop this year!
A lot goes into making our skeleton crew. We painstakingly age and weather each skeleton before putting together each costume. You’ll find our trusty captain manning the helm, as well as his crusty crew enjoying the local grog. Come by to meet the skeleton crew and pick your favorite character!
